Tanti anni fa, nonna Assunta, poco più che bimbetta racconta ai suoi amici paesani che la sorella Maria, che da mesi era andata a frequentare la prima elementare a Roma, era tornata e le aveva riportato tanti bei doni:

 

“ SOREMA MI HA REPEPORTATU TANTE COSE: LU VESTITU, UN PARU DE SCARPI, GLI ARANCI E PURE LI PORTUGALLI!”

 

Tutti gli amici scoppiarono in una grossa risata perché la simpatica Assunta non sapeva che i portugalli era un altro modo di chiamare le arance.

Many years ago, grandmother Assunta, little more than a little girl, told her peasant friends that her sister Maria, who for months had gone to attend first grade in Rome, had returned and had brought her many beautiful gifts:

 

“MY SISTER TAKEN SO MANY GIFTS FROM ROME: A DRESS, SHOES, ORANGES AND LI PORTUGALLI!”

 

All the friends burst into a big laugh because the nice Assunta did not know that portugalli was another dialect way of calling oranges.

Hace muchos años, la abuela Assunta, poco más que una niña, les dijo a sus amigos campesinos que su hermana María, que durante meses había ido a estudiar primer grado a Roma, había regresado y le había traído muchos regalos hermosos:

 

"MI HERMANA ME REPORTÓ TANTAS COSAS: UN VESTIDO, UN PAR DE ZAPATOS, NARANJAS Y PURO PORTUGALLI!"

 

Todos los amigos se echaron a reír porque la simpática Assunta no sabía que portugalli era otra forma de llamar naranjas.

Il y a de nombreuses années, la grand-mère Assunta, un peu plus qu'une petite fille, racontait à ses amis paysans que sa sœur Maria, qui depuis des mois était allée en première année à Rome, était revenue et lui avait apporté beaucoup de beaux cadeaux:

 

"Ma soeur ramène tant de choses: une robe, une paire de chaussures, des oranges et du pur PORTUGALLI!"

 

Tous les amis ont éclaté de rire parce que le gentil Assunta ne savait pas que portugalli était une autre façon d'appeler les oranges.
